|ROSENBERG (Covering Fort Bend News)- On Thursday, May 17, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels will host their 11th Annual Senior Prom with the help of Lamar Consolidated High School students at the Bud O’Shieles Community Center, 1330 Band Road, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Senior citizens from Fort Bend and Waller Counties will go back in time and enjoy a morning of dining, dancing, prom court selection and crowning of king and queen.
“This tradition has been with FBS for over a decade and every year the anticipation on our seniors faces grow, as they look forward to getting all dressed up for prom,” said Manuela Arroyos, CEO of Fort Bend Seniors. “Whatever their age, and whether it’s their first prom, or it’s been 60 years, we see a youthful spirit in all our seniors when the music starts.”
This year’s theme for Senior Prom will be “Yule Ball.” Seniors will come dressed in their favorite ball gowns and tuxedos and dance the “night” away. Fort Bend County Precinct 4 Constable Trever Nehls is sponsoring a catered meal for the event, linens will be donated by Safari Texas and prom decorations will be provided courtesy of LCHS and its student marketing and business organization. In addition to decorating the community center in true “ball” style, the students will also serve as DJs, waiters and dance partners to senior prom participants.
“I’m looking forward to once again hosting the Senior Prom with Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels Program,” said Sonja Hummel. “I’ll never forget the first year when one of the clients gave a student a wrist corsage his daughter had made for the occasion. He only recently arrived to America from Colombia to live with his daughter during his twilight years, and didn’t speak English. But because a student’s mother was from El Salvador, the student understood his language and spent time visiting with him. He explained his daughter told him of our custom to give your date a corsage, and the first girl to talk to him would be his date for the day.”
